Thursday 29th September – Typhoon stops play – Hong Kong

The first thing I did when I got up this morning was check the Hong Kong Observatory website for the typhoon warning –bad news for us, it had gone to 8.  The system is 1-10 with 10 being a typhoon over Hong Kong, but only 1, 3, 8, 9 & 10 are used.  The level 8 meant gale force winds, schools and public buildings closed, Disney land closed, no ferry’s, minimised MRT & trams and no neon lights.  We later found out it meant that all of the shops, with the exception of pedlars of tat were closed.

We had a very long day – we went next door to Macca’s for breakfast, we came back to our shoebox watched a few movies. Went out for a walk (it’s level 9 where they advise you stay indoors).  We’re right near Nathan Road which is meant to be a busy shopping street, I think maybe like Oxford Road but it was deserted with hardly any cars.  It was a bit windy but it didn’t feel dangerous.  The museums were all closed too.

We found an open Starbucks, wandered some more – even the park was locked and bolted.  We were near our hotel when it started to rain heavily and we got soaked. We found a Japanese restaurant open for lunch.

Then we sat at the hotel waiting and checking for the signal to be lowered. Finally at 16:15 it was, to a level 3. We hit the streets, the Neon lights were on and there were people & cars! Not all the shops had decided to open but we found a brilliant shop on one of the back streets. I got myself a pair of black leggings – I’ve tried on lots in the past but they’ve always made my legs look like fat sausages – these ones are flattering (whoop!) and I got a nice cardi to see me through the bitter winter.  Paul got a couple of pairs of jeans.  The kids happily skipped along.

It seemed a lot windier when we were out in the evening compared to earlier in the day.    We had dinner at another cafe and then it was time to go back to the hotel.

Hopefully the typhoon warning will subside further and we’ll get to Disney tomorrow.
